What Does Your Support of the HGES PTO Accomplish?

Possible Playground Addition

This is a question that I would have as a parent if I weren’t on the PTO, so I thought I should take a moment to give you the answer. As your PTO President, I firmly believe that all of our spending needs to be done in an open and transparent manner by keeping the parents fully informed as to how their dollars are being spent.

The basic operating budget of the PTO supports things like class fieldtrips, Staff Appreciation, Accelerated Reader, Culture Fair, Hospitality, Book Fair, and the Teacher Fund that allows teachers to purchase extra things for their classrooms. In addition, the PTO has made family activities a priority as we all settle in to our new school, such as Family Movie Night, Donuts With Dads, and the upcoming Muffins With Moms. The PTO also recently approved the purchase of additional gym equipment that will benefit all of the students of HGES by providing more options for aerobic exercise when they can’t go outside. This purchase was requested by our gym teachers and included a commercial quality X-box Kinect, Dance Dance Revolution, and other software that will be used to show the kids that exercise can also be fun.

The PTO’s largest goal for the year is to expand our small playground area. With 588 students, the equipment that we have available is just not enough for everyone to enjoy recess. There are some small pieces that can be added immediately to improve the situation, such as soccer goals and additional swings. However, there really needs to be another large modular set so that both the older and younger kids have plenty of room to play. Attached to this post is a schematic of a possible playground expansion that has been recommended by our consultants. It is obviously very expensive and will require the PTO to do some saving to make the purchase, but would be a wonderful and necessary addition to the kids’ play space.

As we approach our big Casino Night parent fundraiser on Saturday, February 23rd, please know that the proceeds from ticket sales, silent auction, the iPad raffle, and all other events will be going directly toward the purchase of this playground equipment. As always, we thank you for your continued and generous support of the HGES PTO! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at kimberly_klein@comcast.net.
